MacGrep inherits most functionalities of the grep utility. Basically, it looks for text patterns in files. MacGrep adds the following features:

gui options for recursivity, case ignorance, use of regular expressions, line numbers display, line count, and not matching mode
menu item to save your favorite options
menu item to retrieve recent search roots
search all files of a directory when you specify one without the "recurse" option
full aqua interface, including sheets (yeah! :-)
pop up menu to select target file encoding character set
menu item to check for new versions (hat to test that, thanks Cocoa Dev Central)
french localization (hat to test that too)
